OOH FUN
First single Southend-on-Sea Co-Op 1969 ( I was 5) ' Rose Garden' by Lynn Anderson and I've still got it. Never bought another country record until about 5 years ago.
Then got loads loads of those K-Tel compilation albums but the first proper album I bought was 'Abba's Greatest Hits' (the 1974 version) on cassette closely followed by 'Arrival'.
Progressed on to the likes of ELO and then discovered ROCK
'Down To Earth' by Rainbow and surprise surprise first prog album I bought was 'Close To The Edge' (also the 1st cd I ever bought).

First Single and Album |
|
To the best of my knowledge the first single I bought was "She Loves You" by the Beatles. I was nine years old and just starting to listen to music. Of course the Beatles just blew me away.
First album was the Beatles again I believe "Meet the Beatles". In my neighborhood if you were not buying Beatles you were nobody.
My first prog album was " In the Court of the Crimson King". By then I had deserted the Beatles and was hooked by progressive music. I still have the King Crimson album which I think was 1968. I have been listening to prog now for 40 years! It just keeps getting better.

First Album: Meat Loaf, Bat out of Hell
First Single: David Bowie, Rock 'n' Roll Suicide
First 'prog' album, bit difficult really as I suppose it depends how 'broad' your classification of 'prog' actually is!!
Personally I found some of the early Bowie albums 'proggish' plus the likes of 'Sgt. Pepper' by the Beatles.
However, my first 'purely prog' album was probably Seconds Out by Genesis. Heard this at a friends house one night whilst drinking some wicked Home-Brew ... I knew I had to have it. Bought it next morning and still play it nowadays, great album!

This depends on whether you mean "first album I owned" or "first album I bought myself". The first album I owned (which was bought for me at a tender age!) was Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds; the first album I bought for myself was either Floyd's Meddle or Jean Michel Jarre's Magnetic Fields (bought at the same time). First prog album... I guess it depends how proggy you feel Floyd is - my first "unequivocably prog album" would probably have been Genesis: either Invisible Touch (bought first, but less proggy) or Nursery Cryme (bought shortly afterwards, clearly very prog!).
First single? Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights, bought the day of release! I was only 6. I badgered my mum to buy it for me after we saw it on the telly...

'Meet The Beatles' I believe was the US version of the second album released by the Fab 4 originally entitles 'With The Beatles' over this side of the pond. Some cracking tracks on it - I bought it too, along with every other Beatles album!

First single : (scarily similar to Stuart again) Rolf Harris - it was an EP with about 4 songs including Court of King Caractacus and Big Dog. Somewhere around 1967 I think.
First album : Loads of comedy records (Stan Freeburg, Michael Bentine, etc.) but first music one was bought for me (Birthday I think) and was something like "Brass Band Pop" with songs like "Puppet on a String", "Congratulations" and the like played by a Coldstream Guards-style brass band. I was young...
First prog : Rick Wakeman - Six Wives. Blew me away and opened the door to Yes...

First album that I owned - Rubber Soul - I must have been about 4 when I was given it.
The first album that I recall spending my money to buy (from a paper round, I suppose) was Hotel California. Great guitars.
First CD - Dire Straits - Love Over Gold.
I never did buy many singles. The first might have been Justin Hayward - Forever Autumn.

That would be Christie - not quite a one hit wonder, but not far off it...wasn't that song used in Yellow Pages adverts in the 70s?

Yeah, I'm certain it was used in an ad, so that would make sense. R.E.M. did a cracking cover of it for one of their singles a few years back - pure cheese!
